AMA Dragbike combines Funnybike and Pro Mod into 1/8 mile Pro Comp Tuesday, April 20, 2010

New Class Builds on The Past and Brings Excitement to The Future.

AMA Dragbike is proud to announce a new class that will combine the current Funnybike and Pro Modified classes into a single 1/8 mile eliminator, Pro Comp (PC).

The new class name will take a page out of history. In the formative years of motorcycle drag racing Pro Comp pitted Turbo bikes, nitro bikes, nitrous bikes - and seemingly any combination of the three - against each other in a single class.

"There has been a demand that we combine the two classes and purses to create a single class," commented Scott Valetti, AMA Dragbike President/CEO. "We chose to compete it in the eighth mile to bring the performances of vastly different motorcycles closer together."

"We are confident that this new class will provide a very competitive and entertaining show," he continued.

Pro Comp will begin competition at the AMA Dragbike Spring Nationals at US-131 Dragway in Martin, MI. Fans will want to be in attendance to witness the inaugural race.

The new format should lend itself well to the propagation of late model power plants such as the Suzuki Hayabusa and the Kawasaki ZX-14 as well as providing an arena for classic GS and ZX-based machines and of course the thundering Nitro Harleys.

The new Pro Comp class will be sponsored by Mickey Thompson Tires. Carl Robinson, Motorsports manager for Mickey Thompson Tires, is enthusiastic about the potential of the new Pro Comp.

"I really like the direction that AMA Dragbike chose to take," said Robinson. "It opens up the field and will give the fans a much more exciting class."

Long-time Funnybike and Pro Mod sponsors Robinson Industries, Fast by Gast and Precision Metal Fab Racing will acquire presenting rights for the class.

AMA Dragbike's Pro Comp class will see nitro, turbo and nitrous bikes - both V-Twin and 4-Clyinder - battling it out for a spot in the quickest 16-bike 1/8th mile field in motorcycle drag racing.

The only combination that will not be permitted is the blown nitro, which is designated Top Fuel.

To keep the class truly "run whatcha brung" the rules have been streamlined. Aside from normal safety rules and the prohibition of blown nitro, Pro Comp rules will only dictate minimum weight based on tire size.

  • Up to 11" - 600lbs. minimum
  • 12" - 660lbs. minimum
  • 13-14" - 720lbs. minimum

The total $13,500 purse offers a sizable winner's share and generous round-win money.

The Pro Comp Purse (14 bike minimum):
Winner $5,000
Runner-up $2,500
Semi $1,000
Qtr $500
Eighth $250

In addition, Precision Metal Fab Racing will also award the #1 qualifier in Pro Comp with a $300 bonus.

Racers will retain points earned in both Funnybike and Pro Mod thus far this season. Starting at the Martin, MI, event the points are combined into the new class, Pro Comp.

To make things even more interesting and entertaining on raceday, Fast by Gast has offered a purse for those who do not qualify for the Pro Comp field. Those racers will combine in the non-points Fast by Gast Outlaw class on Sunday.

"We have always done our best to support the racers throughout our 37 years in the sport," stated Paul Gast. "Nobody likes to go home on Saturday, so we came up with this idea, and the purse will help these guys take home some money and improve" Gast continued.

There will be a 4-bike minimum after final pairing of Pro Comp to form the class. Racers will be randomly paired in the lanes.
